Vermont state game wardens are trying to find out who illegally hunted and killed a moose out of season.

The Caledonian Record reports (http://bit.ly/2xS7ugH) wardens said the cow moose was shot from the road and at night on Saturday, Sept. 23. The state’s regulated moose hunting seasons are in October, and are limited to a small number of hunting permits awarded through a lottery system.

Wardens said after the moose was shot, it was dragged on the road behind a truck over 11 miles to the town of Orleans. The moose was left to rot in the 80-degree heat by the side of a road.
