Gary Johnson, the Dallas-area man who accidentally shot himself while dove-hunting Monday near Bangs, is in critical condition at Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, a hospital spokesman said.

Johnson, 60, had just shot a dove on rural property off FM 586, about a mile south of Bangs, and was trying to retrieve the bird when when his shotgun accidentally discharged, sheriff’s officials said earlier. Johnson was struck in the abdomen by 12-gage birdshot and was flown by an Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter to the Temple hospital.
