A 47-year-old Cotton Center area farmer is recovering at home following a deer hunting accident Tuesday afternoon.

The farmer was stepping from his cotton stripper when he was struck in the left leg by a .30-06-caliber rifle round fired by an 18-year-old Abernathy man, possibly a half mile away.

Garrett Royal, a student at Abernathy High School, shot a mule deer and the round passed through that animal and continued on before striking the victim about 6 miles southwest of Cotton Center.

Royal shot the mule deer on the rear left hip. The bullet ricocheted off the animal’s hip bone, passed through the deer’s body and continued on until it struck the farmer, who he also did not identify.
