The drawstring on the Barnett Jackal Crossbow, one of the products in question, launches an arrow at 325 feet per second, according to company literature.

A thumb accidentally in the path of the string can be injured severely, even amputated.

“I looked, and my thumb was hanging off,” David Reynolds, an injured hunter told News 8. “I thought for a second it was just a cut, and I tried to put it back into place. Instead of a reassuring pop, it was just kind of a mushy sound.” His accident took place in September in Virginia.

David Harville, an Indiana hunter, had his thumb injured using a Barnett bow
