SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota — 68-year-old Glen Schummer has been sentenced in federal court to a year of probation and fined $18,000 for trapping and killing migratory birds.

Schummer had two illegal pole traps on his property to catch great-horned owls and various species of hawks.

Once the birds were trapped, Schummer would either shoot or club the birds to kill them. Schummer told authorities that he had killed at least 10 migratory birds.
