On August 2nd Scott Hammond was with his friend John Fuss in the woods installing climbing sticks (a type of ladder) at one of his tree stands some 12 to 15 feet above the ground. He pulled back while trying to work on a balky fitting and the next thing he knew the section of climbing stick snapped and he was falling backward.

“I just fell straight back, somewhere between 12 and 15 feet, flat on my back. The fall wasn’t too bad, but the landing (stunk).”

His only injury appears to be muscle trauma. He said an X-ray revealed that his spine is out of alignment, but he hoped that issue would resolve itself when the muscle spasms end.

A longtime friend fell from a deer stand last year and shattered his ankle.
