Boy, 14, shot in hunting accident
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources investigated during the weekend after a 14-year-old boy was shot in an apparent hunting accident on Miller Road.
According to SCDNR 1st Sgt. Kristie Lumley, the shooting happened at about 3 p.m. Saturday on Miller Road. Lumley said two 14-year-old Greenwood County boys, whose names were not immediately released because they are juveniles, were squirrel hunting at the time.
Lumley said that, at some point, the boys were sitting on the ground and a nearby 12 gauge shotgun began to fall. Both boys reportedly reached for the gun, with the victim grabbing near the barrel and the other boy grabbing the gun’s stock.
The gun reportedly then fired, with the high brass No. 6 shot striking the victim in the hand and the stomach. The victim reportedly lost the ring finger on the hand and sustained severe injuries from the portion of the shot that hit his stomach.
Lumley said the young victim was rushed to Self Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. Lumley said that, as of late Saturday night, the victim was set to be transferred to a hospital in Greenville.
