Police Suspect Hunting Accident In New Castle Shooting Death

December 1, 2010

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Police suspect a 71-year-old man might have been accidentally shot and killed in a hunting accident in New Castle.

Police said a hunter found the body of Leroy Blashak in a wooded area in Lawrence County on Tuesday afternoon. Investigators said Blashak may have been shot Monday, the first day of deer season.

Police Chief Tom Sansone told Channel 11 News that Blashak may have been shot by a hunter.

Authorities believe Blashak was homeless and was riding a bike to or from a nearby shack when he was killed.

Right now, investigators believe the shooting was an accident, but they’re still interviewing the person who found his body.

“It’s quite possible because of where he was found in the woods, the fact that he was shot at shoulder height, it appears it could have been a hunting accident,” said Sansone .
