Helicopter will lift injured hunter from canyon area

An injured hunter from Rogue River will be lifted by helicopter from a small canyon in the Sardine Creek area this morning.

John Lamere, 57, fell and hit his head while pursuing a buck into a drainage in the area and was unable to walk out, said Jackson County sheriff’s spokeswoman Andrea Carlson.

Lamere and his stepson were hunting in the area Sunday afternoon, and Lamere ran after a buck at about 3:30 p.m., Carlson said. Lamere, who has a heart condition, was pursuing the animal when he fell, Carlson said.

The stepson called his mother, who called 9-1-1. Search crews began looking for Lamere at about 7:40 p.m. and found him just after midnight, Carlson said. He complained of head and neck pain and was dizzy, she said.

She noted that searchers camped with the stranded man overnight and decided this morning to use a helicopter to bring him out of the drainage area. He will be flown to a local hospital for treatment, she said.
