Hunter dies who may have fallen from tree stand
A retired Newark police sergeant died this week while hunting on private property in Knox County.
Thomas Kent Giles, 70, of Newark, was on a friend’s property off Jug Run Road near Bladensburg on Tuesday, when he apparently fell from a tree stand, according to the Knox County coroner’s office.
It’s still unclear whether Giles died from the fall or a medical condition. Results from an autopsy are pending. Giles had been a patrol sergeant with the Newark Police Department. Retired Police Chief Paul Green said he remembers Giles as a meticulous supervisor who was well-liked by his officers and the public.
His survivors include a wife, a son and a daughter.
A graveside service for Giles will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Newark Memorial Gardens.
