The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reported that one of its environmental conservation officers discovered a father and son with three live painted turtles in the bed of their pickup truck June 4. The pair also had eight dead bullfrogs in a cooler.
The father said he and his son had been hunting frogs on the back channel of the Seneca River, according to the report. Because frog hunting season does not begin until June 15, the officer issued the man a ticket. He was also issued a warning notice for taking the painted turtles.
The frogs were kept as evidence, stored in a freezer until the case is settled, according to a DEC spokesperson. The three turtles were released in the Seneca River.
