Zoar Valley Rescue: Crews Rescue Injured Hunter

GOWANDA, NY – As Drew Carriero, 18, of Gowanda continues his recovery at ECMC, his parents issued a statement Wednesday thanking everyone responsible for his successful rescue from Zoar Valley.

Andrew “Drew” Carriero, has been moved out of the hospital’s Trauma/ICU unit and continues to improve after falling off a nearly 100 foot cliff Monday morning while deer hunting.

Rescuers say Carriero, a Jamestown Community College freshman who is pursuing studies in law enforcement, suffered a broken leg, cuts, scrapes, and a possible arm fracture and head injuries. Six others, including the Gowanda police chief, were also pulled from the creek bed after they went down into the gorge to help with the rescue.

The Gowanda police chief was taken to Lakeshore Hospital in Irving to be treated for hypothermia. He was released a few hours later.

Monday’s rescue effort was centered off Point Peter Road in an area known as the Deer Lick Sanctuary.
