Sheriff’s Deputies find body believed to be missing hunter

Missing Hunter Found Dead

Town of Lysander – Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputies say they have found a body matching the description of a hunter reported missing on Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Department’s Air-1 helicopter crew spotted the body around 8:30 a.m.

At 10 p.m. on Sunday, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputies were notified that 63-year-old Gary Jackson had been missing since he entered a wooded area around 12:30 p.m. Sheriff’s Deputies and other agencies began searching the area around 10:30 p.m.

Although the body matches a description of Jackson and his hunting tags also match, the department said the family had not officially identified the body.

On Monday morning, Undersheriff Warren Darby said the body was discovered in a pond near the CSX railroad tracks approximately 250 yards east of Route 48.

Around dusk on Sunday, deputies say three shots were heard near the search area. Darby, who is an avid hunter, explained that three shots usually indicate that a hunter is chasing a deer.

He also explained that the pond obscured the missing man’s scent and cell phone during the night-long search.
