Officers responded shortly before 5:30 p.m. Saturday to the community of Oak Mews Court, Ocean Township, after a neighbor reported seeing animal carcasses behind a building, police said.

An investigation revealed a resident, 30-year-old Aleksandr Bavykin, was allegedly setting illegal leg-hold traps to catch squirrels and raccoons, then butchering the animals on-site.

Bavykin was charged with animal cruelty, illegal possession of a leg-hold trap, illegal use of a leg-hold trap, hunting out of season, and hunting without a license.
