A heroic rescue and airlift started the 2014 firearms deer season off with drama in Hubbard County early Saturday morning.

A 27-year-old deer hunter fell out of his stand 15 feet to the ground just before 7 a.m. southeast of Park Rapids in a peat bog off Highway 87.

The man suffered traumatic back and rib injuries. His identity was not released. He was airlifted to Essentia Hospital in Fargo.

North Ambulance personnel Brent Haynes, a former hunter, quit the sport when he went on a rescue mission a year ago. One of his son’s friends was killed in a duck hunting accident when a fellow hunter shot him.
