A North Dakota man is charged in federal court with illegally trapping migratory birds.
Jesse James Mertins, of Geneseo, N.D., placed traps at the top of wooden poles that surrounded a waterfowl enclosure on a property owned by Mertins, court documents say.
He is charged with 11 counts of unlawful taking of migratory birds.
Court records show he trapped and killed about 26 birds between May and July of 2017, including American robins, great-horned owls, hawks and northern flickers.
He is set to appear in court Sept. 18.
