Three boaters had to be rescued on Devils Lake after their boat broke down on Wednesday, Nov. 6, according to Ramsey County Sheriff Steve Nelson.

Nelson said the three men were duck hunting on Devils Lake at about 4:15 p.m. when they tried to start their boat’s engine but noticed that the gas line was broken.

The sheriff said because it was about 10 degrees at the time, the hunters were in the only boat on the water, prompting one of them to call 911 for help. After about 30 minutes, a boat from Lake Region Search and Rescue was able to safely retrieve the boaters and bring them to shore.

Nelson noted that the three boaters were all well-prepared and were wearing life jackets. The boat was hitting ice drifts, which could have caused them to tip over had conditions been worse, he said.
