A 48-year-old man died after a hunting rifle was discharged in the old Kmart parking lot on Sunday afternoon, according to Helena Police Department Lt. Brett Petty.

Officers responded to the scene after dispatch received multiple reports of gunshots near an older red truck. After arriving, officers found a man outside of the truck with a gunshot wound and began giving him medical aid.

The man was pronounced dead shortly after being transferred to St. Peter’s Health for treatment.

It is believed that the weapon was discharged accidentally while being retrieved from the back of the truck. The deceased man and another man had just returned from a hunting trip.

The name of the deceased man has not been released pending notification of family members.
