ABERDEEN, Miss. (AP) — An Iuka man has been sentenced a year’s probation on a charge of shooting a young bald eagle, a protected animal under federal law.

Prosecutors say 78-year-old William “Bill” Branum was indicted in September 2011 on two counts that he illegally hunted and killed the protected species.

Magistrate Judge David A. Sanders on Friday sentenced Branum and ordered him not to hunt for one year, not to obtain or renew any hunting license for the same period, surrender any hunting licenses, pay $1,000 restitution to the Jackson Zoo and forfeit his 16-gauge shotgun.
