Falsifying information to obtain a hunting license can result in a felony conviction

Headlighting, or the illegal shooting of deer with the aid of a light at night, is on the rise in Mississippi.

“We’ve had 27 cases in the last three weeks,” said Col. Steve Adcock, Chief of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Law Enforcement Bureau.

Adcock made that statement in early December. By the week of Christmas, the total number of headlighting cases worked by officers was up to 74.

The results of being convicted of headlighting are serious, too. Adcock said fines can reach $5,000, the hunter can lose his weapon and other equipment used, lose hunting privileges for three years and pay a hunting license reinstatement fee.
