Information from concerned citizens recently led to the arrest of four individuals in Newton County who are accused of illegally shooting at a deer from an 18-wheeler at night.
“This is an area where we’ve had complaints of people headlighting from the road,” said Col. Steve Adcock, head of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks law enforcement. “At 1:20 a.m., officers saw headlights from a semi.”
Officers made contact with the individuals who were identified as John David Upton, 27, of Newton; Dustin Roy Alexander, 32, of Little Rock, Miss.; Dakota Lace Presley, 21, of Meridian; and Ashley Knight, 22, of Little Rock, Mississippi. After searching the vehicle, Adcock said officers found the shotgun, loaded with 00 buckshot, under a mattress.
All four were charged with hunting from a public road, hunting without a license, illegal shot size and hunting with the aid of a light. According to MDWFP spokesperson Jim Walker, each faces up to $6,000 in fines plus court costs.
MDWFP also reported that a Vicksburg man was convicted last week of multiple hunting violations during the Mississippi River flood.
According to MDWFP, Michael Shane Uzzle was convicted in the Warren County Court of shooting a deer from a boat, hunting from a motorized vessel and trespassing by boat. The incident happened on Dec. 28 on the Bonnie Lake Hunting Club on the Yazoo River.
Uzzle was fined $1,100 and sentenced to 45 days in the Warren County Jail.
