HURON COUNTY, MI — A 45-year-old hunter died after falling from a 20-foot tree stand in the Verona State Game Area east of Bad Axe Thursday morning, the opening day of archery deer hunting season.

DNR Capt. David Malloch said it appeared the man intentionally unhooked his safety harness from the tree after shooting a deer. He was found lying next to the tree. Authorities aren’t certain if the man fell from the top of the tree stand or while descending.
