An 11-year-old boy has died of injuries sustained in a hunting accident as a result of a round discharged by his stepfather.

At about 8 p.m. Sept. 13, the Clay Township Police Department responded to a 911 call to the 6300 block of Benoit Road with one person unresponsive. Upon arrival, officers located an 11-year-old male being attended to by his family, police said.

Clay Township police, along with members of the Clay Township Fire Department, immediately began CPR. While attending to the victim, officers heard a gunshot. They witnessed the mother of the victim with an injury to her hand. She had accidentally discharged the firearm while trying to unload it.

Further investigation revealed that the victim and his family were in the woods looking for a deer. Witnesses said they heard gunshots and then noticed the victim on the ground, injured. The victim was struck by a round discharged by his 40-year-old stepfather.

The boy was transported to McLaren Macomb hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, Clay Township police said.

The victim’s stepfather is currently in custody awaiting review by the St. Clair County Prosecutor’s Office. Further investigation is still pending.
