The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent accidental shooting that occurred in a woody area in the 700 block of Deep Gap Road about 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Deputies were called to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital to take a report of the shooting. Four people, identified as Joseph Wilbanks, 18; Dustin Ramey, 13; Dillon Frenn, 18; and Sarah Ivey, 18, were squirrel hunting when Ramey accidentally shot Wilbanks in the buttocks, according to a news release.
Ramey was walking behind Wilbanks when his rifle accidentallly discharged, the teens told investigators.
Wilbanks was transported to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in a privately owned vehicle. He was treated for his injuries and admitted.
Investigators did not know his condition at the time of the news release.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency is assisting in this investigation.
