2 Hopkins County men banned from hunting migratory birds after conviction for baiting doves

April 23, 2011

MADISONVILLE, Ky. — Two Hopkins County men have been banned from hunting migratory birds anywhere after they were convicted of baiting and hunting mourning doves.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Goebel on Friday sentenced 29-year-old Danny Basham and 27-year-old Lucas Duff to pay a $1,500 fine and $35 in special penalty assessments.

According to a press release from the Justice Department reported in The Messenger, an investigation revealed that in the weeks prior to the 2010 hunting season, Basham and Duff spread 240 pounds of sunflower seeds into an existing crop of sunflowers. That was to keep the birds feeding in the area for a dove hunt hosted on Sept. 6.

Basham and Duff both pleaded guilty in the Owensboro court on Thursday to two counts of violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
