In the Clay County District Court, two hunters received hefty fines for illegally shooting a raccoon and deer.

District Magistrate Judge Bill Malcolm found Dennis Nelson, 21, Abilene, guilty after Nelson pleaded no contest on March 7 to taking a fur bearer without a fur bearer’s license, for which he was fined $50, and harvesting a fur bearer with a fur bearer’s education certificate, for which he was fined $100. Nelson was also sentenced to 48 hours in jail, and placed on six months of unsupervised probation. He shot a raccoon without a hunter’s license.

On March 9, Malcolm also found Casey Hayes, 23, Fort Riley, guilty of taking a deer illegal and hunting from a vehicle, for which he was fined $1,000, lost his license to hunt one year, and his license to hunt deer for years. Malcolm also sentenced Hayes to 48 hours in jail suspended, placed him on six months of supervised probation and ordered him to surrender his rifle..
