Other Things We’re Been Doing
NO POWER PLANTS HERE!
Lee Sneden, a member of the Torne Valley Preservation Association asked Peter Muller and Anne Muller of Wildlife Watch to weigh in for wildlife on the building of a power plant in Hillburn, NY.
Peter is addressing the judge at a public hearing. Our message: NO WAY, JOSE. Animals need a safe environment, too.
NO TOWN SHOOTING! YES!
C.A.S.H., Wildlife Watch, and SCAR (Student Coalition for Animal Rights), and an outraged public attended a meeting of the New Paltz Town Board after hearing that Fawn Tantillo had brought in oodles of hunters the week before to fight against a draft law that would have banned shooting on town owned property. We argued for the sanity of the ban, telling the board that their responsibility is to protect the citizens. Fawn is standing in the back attacking Wildlife Watch for being C.A.S.H. and calling Anne Muller an “animal rights” person. Real fawns aren’t silly. During the summer, the draft law has been in limbo, but will soon be revisited.
NIGHTMARE ON THE FARM OF JOHN UNDERHILL, POUGHKEEPSIE NY
This baby died of starvation over her dead mother’s body while trying to nurse. Her mother was killed by a hunter who used a depredation permit, with the blessings of the DEC, to kill out of the usual killing “season.” He killed the mother and let the dependent fawns fend for themselves. The other fawn was rescued.
This depraved indifference to life is what game agencies call resolving a “nuisance problem” or another euphemism is “conservation.” The bullets used paid into the “Conservation Fund” to promote more hunting!
Thanks to someone who is willing to come forward much can be done. A state Assemblyman’s office has now become involved and the farm minimally will have its depredation permits revoked. We heard it was a regular poaching ground. Depredation permits are basically out-of-season hunting opportunity done under the guise of protecting crops.
THE FOREST IS NO PLACE TO HUNT!
Wildlife Watch attended this forest use meeting to speak out against hunting where people bike, hike and do other non-consumptive recreational activities. Forest use is becoming increasingly valuable to people as it is diminishing. Many complained about motorized vehicles disturbing their spiritual communion with nature. Huh? Shotgun blasts and rifle semi-automatic fire doesn’t bother them?
Call your local DNR to find out when these meetings take place and speak out against hunting.
Wildlife Watch arranged for contact with GeesePeace and the Town of Woodbury. Woodbury then brought in several neighboring towns, thus heading off a goose kill in the area. Thank you to GeesePeace, Holly Hazard and Dave Feld for giving an excellent presentation to the towns that prevented goose kills.
Wildlife Watch heavily lobbied in the Town of S. Fallsburg last year. Our efforts paid off this year when we were assured by the Town Supervisor that there would be NO KILLING of geese in the Town. …And, what about the golf courses? NO KILLING!
C.AS.H. mailed action alerts to our PA members to ask them to attend a public meeting to demand the enforcement of trespassing laws during hunting season. Contact David Kveragas 570-587-3429 to keep abreast of this issue……..C.A.S.H. mailed an alert to our GA members on behalf of Georgia Earth Alliance (GEA) to kill the “right to hunt” bill. YEA GEA! It failed to pass!
