Hooray for Erie County Executive, Mark Poloncarz

Mark Poloncarz, Erie County Executive, vetoed lowering the hunting age when NYS first allowed counties home rule. Only two counties said “NO.” He vetoed it again! He put out this statement:.

In my role as County Executive, I receive child fatality reports after the death of a child. These reports are produced whether the child died in an accident, by illness, or some other manner, including a homicide. I’ve read hundreds of reports since taking office, and every report is one report too many.

That is why I have always said if I could prevent the death of a child in some way, I would. As such, I have vetoed Erie County Local Law 3-1, a law that would have allowed 12 and 13-year-olds to hunt big game with a mentor, because there is a chance a child could die in an accidental shooting. While no child has died since NYS changed its law, children have been accidentally shot and killed in other states since 2020, including a 17-year-old who died last September during a squirrel hunt in Iowa.

The legislature may override my veto. That is their constitutional right and, if they do override my veto, I will respect their decision. However, if they do so, and a child dies in an accidental shooting incident in the future, my conscience will be clean knowing I did everything possible to prevent that death from occurring.

Thank you to all who contacted me, whether in favor of the law or against it. I appreciate your comments and respect your views. However, in the end, I have to act in the manner I believe is best. That is why I have vetoed Local Law 3-1 in the hope that it prevents a child from dying in the future. Thank you.

PRETEENS CAN USE AR-15 STYLE RIFLES TO HUNT UNDER NEW LEGISLATION

In a conversation with the NYS Law Enforcement Division of the DEC, we asked if 12-year-olds in the counties that have opted into a lower hunting age can use AR-15 style weapons, the answer was, “So long as the weapons are compliant with NYS law. THEN THE ANSWER IS “YES.”
