CHESTERTON — An 18-year-old Valparaiso man was injured Wednesday afternoon when he got his left hand caught in a beaver trap at Coffee Creek Park.

The man was at the park with family when he saw the trap just west of the playground area. Not realizing what it was, he reached to pick it up and it clamped down on his arm.

Medics cut off the trap and splinted and wrapped his arm. He was transported to Porter Regional Hospital. His condition is unknown.

“Trapping is not allowed in the park under any circumstances,” said Thomas-Peterson, adding park personnel will be checking the parks periodically to make sure no one is setting traps in the future.
