Boy fatally shot while hunting in Ogle County

OGLE COUNTY – A 14-year-old boy from Bartlett was killed Wednesday morning in an apparent hunting accident.

Ogle County Sheriff Greg Beitel said his department received a call for assistance at 10:29 a.m. regarding a hunting accident on Townline Road, about 2.5 miles east of Forreston.

Police learned that three males – an 18-year-old and two 14-year-olds, all from Bartlett – were hunting squirrels. Police said the victim was shot in the back when a shotgun was accidentally discharged. The boy was transported to Freeport Memorial Hospital, where he died. Police have yet to release his name.

An autopsy has been scheduled by the Stephenson County coroner Friday morning. The Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting, and all investigative reports will be reviewed by the Ogle County state’s attorney’s office.
