A family in Zambia has been plunged into mourning following the death of their 15-year-old son, Namata. Namata was killed by an electric shock at Kalonga Farm in the Lubombo area, Mazabuka, during a bird-hunting escapade. Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Auxensio Daka confirmed the incident, stating that Namata left his home around noon in the company of his friends, aged eight and nine. Nkani in a Facebook post reported that the three children embarked on a bird-hunting expedition roughly two kilometres from home.
Daka reported that the 15-year-old boy struck a bird with his catapult, but instead of falling to the ground, it got stuck in 11kV electrical cables on a pole. He fell to the ground shortly after. How did Namata’s parents hear of his death? The young boy’s friends ran home and informed his parents about what had transpired, and they called the police. The police found Namata’s catapult and a handful of small stones he used to hit the birds in his pocket. He had sustained severe injuries, including a deep open wound on his right chest, and injuries to his leg, ankle, wrist, and forearm. The officers moved his body to Mazabuka General Hospital Mortuary for preservation, awaiting post-mortem and burial.
