Hunter Guilty Of Illegally Killing Grizzly Bear
JACKSON, Wyo. ― A jury has convicted a 41-year-old Teton Village man of illegally killing a grizzly bear.
Stephen Westmoreland had claimed self-defense in the killing of the bear in the Ditch Creek area north of Jackson last September.
But the six member jury found him guilty of illegally shooting the animal following a two-day trial in the ninth Circuit Court.
Judge Tim Day levied a $500 fine against Westmoreland, who could have been sentenced to a year in jail and a $10,000 fine.
Wyoming Game and Fish Department officer Bill Long says there’s no license for taking a grizzly.
