WV: Hunting violations can be costly

On the second day of this year’s spring gobbler hunting season, four West Virginia Division of Natural Resources police officers arrested two males for multiple hunting violations. The first was a 79-year-old man from Virginia. This person was charged with hunting wild turkeys over bait.

Further investigation revealed this individual is a past convicted felon who is prohibited from having possession of a firearm. He pleaded guilty in the Pendleton County Magistrate Court.

He was fined $40 for hunting over bait, plus $160.25 in court costs. He was also fined $100 for illegally having possession of a firearm, plus $160.25 in court costs.

The second person was a 41-year-old man also from Virginia. This person was charged with hunting over bait and not having a non-resident hunting license in his possession. This person pleaded guilty to all charges.

He was fined $40 for hunting over bait, plus $160.25 in court costs. His fine for non-resident hunting without a license was $250, plus $160.25 in court costs. This person’s total in fines was $610.50.

In Southwestern Roane county in the Wolf Creek area, four Ohio residents were arrested and charged with multiple hunting violations. In total, 13 wildlife charges were filed against the four individuals, ranging from illegal possession of wildlife, hunting over bait, hunting on private acreage without the written permission from the landowner.

In Wyoming County DNR police arrested a 42-year-old man for hunting out of season, hunting without a license, hunting over bait, and unlawfully using an electronic call to attract turkeys.

This individual was fined $75 for hunting out of season, plus court costs.
In addition, his fine for hunting without a license was $100, plus court costs, $100 for using an electronic call, plus court costs, and $200 for hunting over bait, plus court costs.
