Hunting felon charged for possessing gun

BARRON – A 70-year-old rural Cumberland man convicted of a felony more than 50 years ago and released from his sentence in 1965 was charged Monday with illegally possessing a firearm while deer hunting Saturday.

Joseph J. Romportl of Barronett was released Monday after posting a $1,000 signature bond in Barron County Court. He is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, which has a maximum penalty of five years in prison. His preliminary hearing is Tuesday.
