Stranded duck hunters were rescued Saturday afternoon after their boat ran aground in shallow water near Dam B on the Tyler County side of the lake, according to the Beech Grove Volunteer Fire Department.
Beech Grove VFD said Texas State Park Police from Martin Dies Jr. State Park contacted the department around 2:30 p.m. requesting assistance with hunters who had become stranded after accidentally running aground.
Beech Grove VFD responded with a ProDrive shallow-water boat and met with State Park Police units. Crews quickly located the hunters, who had driven their mud boat into extremely shallow water, causing it to become stuck.
Initial efforts to free the boat were unsuccessful. Responders then requested assistance from the Jasper County Emergency Corps, which arrived with a larger and more powerful shallow-water boat.
After additional effort, responders were able to recover the hunters’ boat and free it from its grounded location.
Officials said the hunters, who were from the Houston area, had been stranded for several hours. They had attempted to contact multiple tow boat companies for help but were told none of the companies serviced the Jasper County area.
Beech Grove VFD and the Jasper County Emergency Corps said both agencies are made up entirely of volunteers and are not commercial tow boat services. However, in the absence of available tow companies, both agencies responded as requested to help those in need.
No injuries were reported.
