In Tennessee and across the nation as well, the No. 1 cause of accidents afield are falls from a tree stand. And it doesn’t matter how experienced the victim may be.

Last November, Don McDonald, 80, was seriously hurt in a tree stand accident that baffles him to this day.

McDonald and son David were hunting in Jefferson County. “I’d gotten up 10 feet or so when I discovered the tree forked,” he said. “There wasn’t anything to do but climb back down and find another one. I’d gone down about two steps — and the next thing I knew, I was on the ground.”

McDonald landed on his left hip. Hard. He heard something crack.

McDonald was transported out of the woods via all-terrain vehicle and rushed to a hospital. He underwent hip replacement surgery and then spent three months in a rehab center.
