Switzerland: 84-year-old hobby hunter dies in Leventina Valley

According to the Ticino Cantonal Police, the hobby hunter was discovered shortly before 10:30 a.m. on September 17, 2025, above Personico at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters. According to initial findings, he fell several meters for reasons still unknown and succumbed to his severe injuries.

In addition to the cantonal police, the Rega and the search and rescue service SAS were involved in the search.

The exact circumstances of the accident are currently being investigated.

In the context of the accident, calls for stricter controls and age limits for hunting licenses are being made again.

The hunting-critical organization IG Wild beim Wild points to accident statistics among older hobby hunters and calls for annual medical-psychological reports based on foreign models.

In Switzerland, there are more human injuries and deaths caused by the risk group of hobby hunters each year than by Islamic terrorists, sects, the mafia, wolves and biker gangs combined.
