A hunter stuck in a mud patch around 50 feet offshore of Sauvie Island was rescued Thursday, Portland Fire and Rescue said.
Around 12 p.m., Portland Fire and Rescue responded to the island working with Fish and Wildlife personnel to locate the man who also helped direct the rescue team. Portland Fire and Rescue described where the hunter was stuck as “heavy mud.”
Initially, Sauvie Island’s fire rescue was set to be deployed to help access the hunter, but before the boat was launched, crews were able to free the man and get him back to dry land uninjured.
Sauvie Island is the largest island on the Columbia River and just west of Portland. Surrounding parts of the island is a floodplain where water levels rise and fall with the Willamette and Columbia rivers.
