November 22, 2010
JACKSON– A hunting trip went awry on Sunday afternoon when a Waverly man was shot during an excursion on Prices Switch Road, just outside of Jackson.
According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Hartford Rawlins, 36, was driving deer toward his wife and son at approximately 2 p.m., when a deer ran between the two groups. His son, who was taking part in youth hunt weekend, fired and, missing the deer, inadvertently shot his father in the abdomen.
Rawlins was life flighted to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, and at press time, his condition had not been disclosed.
It has not been determined whether the juvenile was licensed or had completed a hunter’s safety course; however, representatives from ODNR said that the incident took place on private property and that all hunters were appropriately attired.
The accident is currently under investigation by the southeast district of the ODNR Division of Wildlife. No citations have been issued at this time.
