Hunter shoots hunting companion in Summit County
December 04, 2010
GREEN, Ohio — A 19-year-old hunter from Green was shot twice with a shotgun by the 17-year-old friend who was hunting with him Wednesday night.
The Summit County Sheriff’s office said Scott Boykin was hunting deer in the 900 block of Killinger Road in Green around 5:21 p.m. when he was shot by his companion.
A Sheriff’s office detective said the 17-year-old friend, who lives in North Canton, was walking a distance away from his friend when he fired twice at what he thought was a deer.
Boykin was transported to Akron City Hospital where he was listed in stable condition this morning. He is expected to make a full recovery.
“We are investigating just to make sure that it was an accident,” said Inspector William Holland. “It was snowing that night and it was very dark, which could have been factors in the shooting.”
It’s against the law to hunt after dark.
Holland did not know if the shotgun fired both barrels with one pull of the trigger or if the trigger had to be pulled twice.
