Yorktown man shot in hunting accident
KENT – State police are looking for the person who shot a 65-year-old Yorktown man in a hunting accident in Kent on Saturday.
The victim, whose name is being withheld by police, sustained minor injuries when he was shot by multiple shotgun pellets at about 12:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Ninham Multiple Use Area, near Nichols Road, in Kent, police said.
The Yorktown man, who was unarmed, was walking in the area looking for mushrooms, police said.
A Good Samaritan, driving by at the time, picked up the victim and drove him to Putnam Hospital Center for treatment of minor injuries, state police Investigator Tom Gonska said.
The victim, who said he did not see any hunters in the area at the time of the shooting and could not identify the person who helped him, was still being treated in the hospital as of 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 18, Gonska said.
Police, who did not see any hunters in the area when they investigated, are looking for the shooter and the person who helped the victim, he said.
Small game hunting season began Oct. 1. Shotgun pellets can be used to hunt small game, such as turkeys and small animals, Gonska said.
