A 17-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the leg while checking animal traps Tuesday morning in Cass County, Sheriff William Brueggemann said in a news release.

The boy approached a deputy at about noon at the Greenwood Fire Station and told him about the injury he’d suffered when his .22-caliber rifle went off, the release said.

Medics were called to the station, and the boy was taken to Bryan West Campus in Lincoln with what appeared to be a minor injury, the sheriff said.

Nebraska Game and Parks officials are investigating the incident.
