Butte hunter killed when vehicle backs over him
A Butte hunter was killed when a vehicle backed over him while he was hunting in Madison County Tuesday evening.
Madison County Undersheriff Roger Thompson released the man’s identity as 53-year-old John Rohan.
Authorities were notified of the incident Tuesday around 10 p.m., according to Thompson. He said five hunters from Butte were camping at the Warms Springs Creek camp area near the Ruby River in the Gravelly Range. The driver of a large SUV was parking the vehicle for the night and thought everyone was in or near the tent before backing up. Rohan happened to be behind the vehicle and was run over. Thompson said the hunters placed Rohan in the vehicle and drove to a nearby ranch where they called authorities. Rohan died at the scene.
His death has been ruled as accidental but the Montana Highway Patrol will conduct a crash investigation.
