A 52-year-old hunter is safe after being rescued with the aid of a drone search in Kandiyohi County last Friday.
According to the county sheriff’s office, the hunter from Stewartville was reported missing around 9:57 p.m. in the 29000 block of County Road 9 Northeast in Burbank Township, which is located a few miles southeast of Belgrade, or about 10 miles north of Willmar.
The hunter hadn’t been seen since 5:30 p.m., so the sheriff’s office began searching the area with a drone and a K9. A New London firefighter with a drone was also assisting in the search — and the hunter was spotted by the firefighter, via the drone, just before 11 p.m.
“At approximately 10:52 PM, the New London drone located the missing hunter, who appeared to be in distress,” the sheriff’s office said in a release. “The hunter was waving his arms at the drone, which hovered above him while a rescue team was being formed by the multiple responding agencies.”
The rescue team then entered the woods on foot and by ATV, traversed the dense woods and swampy terrain and reached the man at 11:39 p.m. The hunter was guided out of the woods just before midnight.
The Stewartville man was cleared by medics at the scene.
