MERCER — A Rome man was injured Saturday when he apparently shot himself in the left foot while hunting, according to a press release from the Maine Warden Service.

Andrew Knight, 37, told officials he was hunting with his father, Kenneth Knight, as well as a female junior hunter, off the Rome Road, when the shooting occurred.

“(Andrew) Knight stated he was returning from the woods from hunting to meet with his relatives…near the roadside,” the release says. “Knight stated he placed the gun barrel on the top of his left foot in a resting position and the firearm discharged. The gun was a Remington pump-action 12-gauge shotgun loaded with buck shot when the firearm discharged.”
