The Maine Warden Service says a woman underwent surgery after she was shot while bird hunting in Aroostook County.
Amber Oaks, 31, of Brewer, was hunting in Hamlin with five other people when the incident happened Saturday afternoon, according to officials.
The hunting party was traveling on two quads and two side-by-sides when at about 3:30 p.m., the quad rider at the front of the line saw a bird and went into the woods to try and shoot it.
Oaks was a passenger in the side-by-side that was last in the line and was shot in the knee as the driver was retrieving a gun from the vehicle.
Officials said the driver of the side-by-side had gotten out of the vehicle and was taking out her loaded 12-gauge, semi-automatic shotgun when she bumped the butt of the gun against the roll cage of the side-by-side. This caused her hand to hit the trigger and discharge a round of birdshot into Oaks’ left knee.
According to the Maine Warden Service, Oaks had surgery at Cary Medical Center in Caribou to clean the gunshot wound.
