A hunting trip involving seven men turned fatal after one of them accidentally shot himself with a homemade firearm in the Tebu Hitam forest, police said today.
The 62-year-old victim died after his homemade shotgun discharged accidentally, with the bullet striking his right little finger before piercing his chest.
The tragic incident happened on Sunday.
Pahang police chief, Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman, stated that the incident came to light when a 54-year-old man lodged a report at the Rompin police headquarters on May 4.
“A post-mortem conducted at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan yesterday (Monday) confirmed that the victim died from a gunshot wound to the chest. The case has been classified as sudden death,” he said in a statement today.
Yahaya said following the incident, police detained six men, including an Orang Asli, aged between 35 and 67, to assist in the investigation.
“Police seized five homemade shotguns, an Italian-made Benelli Armi shotgun, and 25 rounds of ammunition from the suspects. All of them are believed to be involved in illegal hunting activities,” he said.
Yahaya said the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1960 for unlawful possession of a firearm, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to RM10,000.
Police will not compromise with any individuals in possession of homemade firearms or carrying firearms without licence, urging them to surrender their weapons to the police, he warned.
