Subject arrested for wildlife and drug violations in West Baton Rouge Parish

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents arrested a subject for alleged deer hunting and drug possession violations in West Baton Rouge Parish on Jan. 2.

Agents arrested Hunter Gunn, 37, of Maringouin, for hunting deer during illegal hours, taking wild game quadrupeds with a firearm equipped with an infrared sight, failing to tag deer, failing to validate deer, failing to wear hunter’s orange, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Agents received information that Gunn was actively hunting on property near Port Allen without permission from the landowner. Agents found Gunn actively hunting on the property from a deer stand without hunter’s orange and with a rifle fixed with a thermal scope.

During questioning, Gunn admitted to harvesting an antlered deer during illegal hours and an antlered deer during legal hours on Dec. 31 from this property. Agents also found Gunn in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Gunn also admitted to taking a doe that he failed to tag or validate near Ramah earlier during the deer-hunting season with the same rifle fixed with the thermal scope.

Agents seized the rifle, thermal scope, head of the antlered deer and deer meat. Agents arrested Gunn and booked him into the West Baton Rouge Parish Jail. West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies also arrested Gunn for criminal trespassing.

Hunting deer during illegal hours carries a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail.

Taking wild game quadrupeds with a firearm equipped with an infrared sight brings a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail. Failing to tag and failing to validate deer carries up to a $350 fine. Failing to wear hunters orange brings up to a $50 fine.

Possession of drug paraphernalia carries up to a $300 fine and 15 days in jail. Possession of marijuana brings up to a $100 fine.

Gunn will also face civil restitution totaling $5,282 for the three illegally harvested deer.

Agents involved in the case include Sgt. Russel Marbury, Sgt. Tyler Smith, Corporal Jason Sanchez and Agent Hayden Byrd.
