Hunting incident injures 1 teen
Nineteen-year-old Dylan Brown of Ouachita Parish was shot in the back of the head during a hunting accident at the Lake D’Arbonne National Wildlife refuge on Sunday.
Capt. Alan Bankston, enforcement officer of the Union Parish branch of Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, said the accident, which occurred just inside the Ouachita Parish line, was reported at 9:54 a.m. Union and Ouachita parish police responded, as well as D’Arbone refuge officers, Bankston said.
James A. Speller, 20, of Ouachita Parish, reportedly accompanied Brown while hunting. Bankston said it is believed Speller accidentally tripped, causing the gun to fire.
“(Brown) was struck in the back of the head,” Bankston said. “They were in a small boat, the two of them together. They were given some assistance by some hunters in the area and had some difficulty getting back to the bank in a small boat in a stumpy area.”
Brown was airlifted from the wildlife refuge to a Shreveport medical facility. At this time, Brown is reported to be in critical condition, and an investigation is in progress.
