Hunting guide accused of telling hunters to shoot wood ducks out of season, throwing ducks into canal

A hunting guide was cited for accidentally telling hunters to shoot out-of-season birds, then throwing them into a canal, officials said.

Matthew Morgan, 33, of Cameron, was guiding hunters near Gueydan on Sept. 27 during the open teal season, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents said. Morgan told agents he gave the hunters the call to shoot a flock of birds before realizing they were wood ducks.

The hunters shot four wood ducks, and Morgan said he threw the ducks into the canal behind the hunting blind, agents said. He was cited for taking wood ducks out of season and wanton waste of migratory game birds.

Taking wood ducks out of season and wanton waste brings a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail for each offense. Morgan will also be assessed civil restitution totaling $204 for the illegal taking of the wood ducks, agents said.
